Caernarfon harbour

Caernarfon harbour

Starting at the south of the Menai Strait, Caernarfon is famous for its castle but it also has a pleasant harbour.

Brittania Bridge

The Britannia Bridge across to Anglesey was originally an iron tube railway bridge like that at Conway however after serious fire damage it was rebuilt with rail on one deck and the new A55 road on the top.

Menai Bridge

The original Menai Bridge was Telford's suspension bridge, similar to its contemporary at Conwy which still carries road traffic across the Strait to and from the Isle of Anglesey - Ynys Môn in Welsh.

Llanfair PG

Just across the Menai Strait is the village with the incredibly long name - 56 letters - usually shortened to Llanfair PG, rather than try typing it out you can see it in full on the second photo of the railway station name board.  The first one is of the visitor centre by the station.

Llanfair PG station sign

It needs a fair size building to get a nameboard this length on!

Llanfair PG

This sign has a pronunciation guide for the benefit of the English visitor, but who put the lamp post in front of it!

Ferries at Holyhead

On the other side of Anglesey is Holyhead - itself on Holy Island - which is an important ferry port for services to Ireland.  This photo shows an Irish Ferries vessel and a Stena Line one in port.
